Chiropractic colleges require nearly 200 hours of training in neuroscience significantly more than allopathic medical school. A neurological evaluation consists of a physical examination consisting of a number of simple and painless tests. The purpose of these tests is to assess your neurological function. Checking muscle strength, reflexes and skin sensation are methods of evaluating the nerves. Nerve conditions are diagnosed as neuropathies, simply meaning a pathologic or sick nerve. The vertebrae of the spine provide bony armor for the protection of the spinal cord which runs from the brain to the tail bone. When a bone or a disc is displaced, it can create pressure on the spinal cord and/or nerves which can result in pain and may cause various symptoms throughout the body, including numbness, tingling sensations, muscle weakness, or loss of proper function. These conditions are typically called radiculopathies since the nerve pain tends to radiate up, down or outward and not be restricted to any one pinpoint location. Nerve tissue may suffer from permanent, irreparable damage without proper oxygenation and nutrition as a result of spinal subluxations or peripheral neuropathy of the extremities. The precise location and prompt diagnosis of the type of peripheral neuropathy is essential for proper treatment. Other types of peripheral neuropathy include diabetic, statin or hypercholesterolemia drug induced and chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy. Some neuropathies tend to be in the feet, the furthest appendage from the body core. Depending of the diagnosis, proper treatments may consist of chiropractic adjustments, physiotherapy, physical strengthening procedures, acupuncture, cold level laser therapy, LED, infrared, vibration therapy and/or nutritional supplementation. Definitive diagnosis may require electrodiagnostic testing called electromyography or EMG. Dr. Findlay completed three hundred hour program in electrodiagnostic evaluation in 2000 at Thomas Jefferson University and Neumann College in Pennsylvania and has conducted hundreds of EMG studies over the years in order to provide a precise diagnosis of the neuropathy.
Dr. Findlay completed an additional 300 hours of postgraduate neurology training with Carrick Institute which may eventually lead to a third board certification. Between college and postgraduate training Dr. Findlay has amassed more than 800 hours in neurology based training making him highly qualified to diagnose your condition. And that doesn’t include his nearly 30 years of clinical experience!
